Are You Marketing On MySpace?

Like many others, I dismissed my MySpace account when Facebook became really popular. Then Twitter came onto the scene, and it was the final nail in the coffin.

Or so I thought. MySpace doesn’t intend on becoming the next Yahoo, and they’re making changes to make the user experience better. Their 2.0 Profile layouts are much cleaner, their spam and privacy options are VERY thorough, and you have full control over everything now. Yes, certain users profiles still crash my IE browser, but that’s the price of customized profiles..

So why come back to MySpace? Like it or not, there are 100+ million users on MySpace, and you’d be silly not to market to them. The demographic is slightly younger on a whole, but a well promoted profile can stll garner a TON of views and actions.

So how do you make the most out of MySpace? In our case, we wanted to drive more traffic to our sports blogs. So we simply created a great looking profile, started making friends with other ACTIVE users who had similar interests, and included a RSS feed widget on our profile. If people landed on our profile and saw a story that caught their eye, they could click through and be transfered directly to our website. Hopefully they’ll like what they see, and they’ll bookmark your site for a future visit.

Time spent? In my case, I spent the better part of a few days.. Was it worth it? It’s too soon to tell, but I’ll post a follow-up in a few weeks once I’ve got some analytics data to go over.
