Merchants With Unrealistic Affiliate Expectations

Yes, I’m also a merchant, but today’s post comes to you from my affiliate marketer point of view. As I’ve mentioned on a few different occasions, I have a fantastic relationship with a ticket broker, and I’ve made a LOT of money from their affiliate program.

They aren’t using CJ, LinkShare, or another top-tier network. And their commission rate isn’t the “highest in the industry”. These two facts alone cause many people to dismiss them and move on.

But things aren’t always so black and white.

This merchant offers an 8% commission, uses a 60-day cookie, and gives you personalized support that can’t be beat!

Today, while logged into another affiliate network, I decided to see what some other ticket brokers were offering.

Company #1 offers a 12.5% commission, but there were two issues I had with them:

1) A 1-Day Cookie!
2) Extremely high prices (and an expensive service fee to boot).

Everyone knows that you can’t always close 100% the sales on the first visit. Sometimes a person will bookmark the site, do some other research, and come back to that site a few days later when they’re ready to make a purchase. Or maybe they want to wait and see if the price will come down. In any event, with a 1-day cookie, you lose out on any commission due to you in this scenario.

Company #2 offers a 10% commission, but I had two issues with them as well:

1) They cap their commission at $100.
2) Their website is ugly.

Sell a $1000 ticket, and you’ll earn $100. But sell a $2000 ticket, and you still only earn $100! That’s just stupid. I like to promote big ticket events (Super Bowl, World Series, NBA All Star Game, etc), but I’m not going to bother if I’m not getting compensated for my effort.

In addition, an ugly site just doesn’t convert well.. My merchant has spent considerable time and money to improve their conversion rates, and I think their new look is just fantastic. A landing page that converts well is key.

Some food for thought when you’re choosing a merchant to promote.
