I’m a simple guy with simple tastes.. And while guys like John Chow enjoy fine dining, some of his meal pictures just make me cringe. :)

This weekend, we celebrated my birthday at Benihana. I hadn’t been there since I was 5 years old, but a free dinner e-mail convinced me to give them a shot! (You can sign up for The Chef’s Table, and they’ll send you a free dinner coupon (up to $30) on your birthday.

For those of you unfamiliar with the brand, Benihana is a Japanese cuisine restaurant. Dinner is more of an event, with chefs cooking your dinner right in front of you. Kids will enjoy the theatrics, though I was just there for the food.

I opted for the Deluxe Meal, which was Filet Mignon and Lobster Tail. All meals come with soup, salad, shrimp (AMAZING!), rice (we paid extra for the chicken fried rice, but weren’t that impressed), and our meals also came with dessert.

The Filet was great, so tender and flavorful. The Lobster wasn’t bad either, but it picks up some of the other flavors from the grill, which I wasn’t prepared for. When I go back, I’ll probably stick with the Filet, or get the Filet & Shrimp combo.

Dinner for the two of us was around $80. The birthday coupon took $30 off, so our total cost after tip was around $65.. Not too bad for a special occasion, but definitely not a place we’d eat at “just because”.
