XM / Sirius Dropping More Stations!

We’ve been long-time XM/Sirius subscribers, starting back back 2004. We started out with Sirius, because my wife preferred their 80s music compared to XM’s offerings at the time. I was happy because I got to listen to Howard Stern. In 2008, we were forced to switch to XM, because the wife’s car came with XM from the factory. It wasn’t a huge deal, because by then the XM/Sirius merger was already underway. But I lost Stern. 🙁

XM’s answer – The Best Of Sirius, a $4.99/month add-on if you wanted a few Sirius stations that didn’t make the cut. FUCK THAT! I’m already paying a ridiculous amount of money for XM, for them to try and extort another $60/year is just insane. Sorry Howard, I’m a 20+ year listener, but I’m out!

So we’re cruising with XM, a little unhappy because we lost some stations like Stern, Playboy Radio, and Boombox (one of the sickest stations I’ve ever heard!).. But we make do, and continued with it because it still beat terrestrial radio. Many of the stations are getting REALLY repetative, as we learned on a recent 6 hour roadtrip, where they just kept looping the same 15-20 songs over and over again.. It was maddening, as SAT radio used to be known for playing more obscure songs that you wouldn’t hear on regular FM radio. Now it’s just generic crap.

But now they’ve done it. They dropped The Strobe, their only decent 70’s/Disco station. They’ve reshuffled the old DJs onto other stations, and pissed off a ton of people in the process. Rumor has it that they also got rid of some Love station, which has my wife fuming.

Our contract is up for renewal in January, and I’m 99% sure that I’m done.. I just ordered a new car (post about it coming soon), and I decided to pass on XM or Sirius.. The car features streaming bluetooth audio support, which means I can play music from my iPhone without wires.. All of my music, Pandora, and various other streaming music stations are available for me to listen to, at no cost!

If changes aren’t made soon, I predict that SAT radio’s days are numbered..
