A Suggestion For The PR People Out There

As a member of the press, I get invited to a number of great media events. It’s a perk of the job, and I’m always thankful when I get invited to an event. But lately I’ve noticed a disturbing trend at these events, and I wanted to put it out there for any PR people that might come across this post.

In the old days, a media trip usually meant a juicy steak and lots of drinks. But these days, the food being served looks like it came out of the Top Chef kitchen.

fancy appetizers

Some trendy hipster might appreciate these ridiculous concoctions being served, but 90% of the attendees are going hungry because of this.

On a recent trip, servers were offering up REALLY high-end appetizers that honestly just didn’t taste very good at all. You saw them circling the room many times, as no one was taking the food. Yet another server serving chili dogs was absolutely mobbed, and they were gone quick.

I have no problem with fancy food, but it needs to be fancy food that tastes good and appeals to a broad audience. Years ago, we had our wedding reception at a swanky country club, and appetizers consisted of mini beef wellingtons, Swedish meatballs, chicken quesadillas, and a few other things I can’t remember.

Our family and friends couldn’t stop raving about the food, it was amazingly delicious. But it wasn’t pretentious. See the difference?
