My Review of WP-SpamFree

I run a large network of blogs, and we’ve had to deal with spammers from the get-go. Akismet has always done a great job of weeding out the spam, especially coupled with moderated comments. But as the popularity of these sites grew, moderation became more and more of a chore. Then we moved to a cloud environment, and found that Akismet, along with the constant use of the Dashboard to moderate comments, was sending our usage numbers through the roof. This resulted in a hefty bill from our hosting company. :(

After evaluating a number of options, we settled on WP-SpamFree. We’ve been using it for nearly 6 months now, and wanted to voice my opinions about it, given that most of the reviews out there are from people who just installed it and are still in the honeymoon phase.

It’s a good product, but not without it’s flaws. It’s supposed to combat 99.9% of spammers, using some sort of secret methods. Yet we’ve had a number of isolated incidents where spammers were able to leave THOUSANDS of comments, which we had to painstakingly remove by hand. Frustrated with this, we turned off the “Allow Users Behind Proxy Servers To Comment” option, since “most spammers hide behind a proxy”, at least according to WP-SpamFree.

This was a huge mistake. Within 24 hours, my inbox was flooded with e-mails from regular readers who could no longer comment! I guess I underestimated the number of people who use a proxy to get around their work filters. Other people were getting flagged even though they weren’t using a proxy. Whatever the case, it was a disaster, and I quickly reverted back to the old way.

I added a number of additional rules to my blacklist (even though my list was pretty extensive to begin with), and that solved the immediate problem. Now a new version of WP-SpamFree has been released, but I have no idea what’s changed. The new version is v2.1.1.0, but the version history hasn’t been updated since v2.1.0.8. (Mind you, I’ve been on v2.1.0.9 for months now!)

So what now? Well, on the blog that was getting the most abuse, we installed Akismet, along with NoSpamNX. It’s only been a week or so, but so far it’s doing great. Everyone can post, spammers have been kept at bay, and there have been no false-positives. Because of this, we’ve been able to keep moderation turned off, and CPU usage levels on the cloud are unaffected.

I’ll probably give it another few weeks before making the change across our entire network, but if everything continues to work well, I’ll be saying goodbye to WP-SpamFree, and using NoSpamNX instead.

Would love to hear other users’ experiences with either product.. Thanks!

Review: Michael Jackson – This Is It DVD

I got a chance to watch the upcoming Michael Jackson – This Is It DVD, thanks to a friend who got an advanced copy. The DVD doesn’t hit the streets until January 26th, but you can pre-order it on Amazon today.

I’m a HUGE Michael Jackson fan. My first concert? Michael Jackson at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, for the Thriller tour. It was awesome!

I was planning on making the trip to London to see him at the O2 Arena, and can’t tell you how absolutely devastated I was when he passed – Just weeks before his tour was set to launch.

The DVD draws from more than one hundred hours of behind-the-scenes footage from April-June 2009, featuring Jackson rehearsing a number of his songs for the show. Just watching the DVD, you can tell that the This Is It Tour would have set the bar for what a concert tour should be.

We’re blessed to have this footage at all, and is a must-have for any Jackson fan out there!

How To Import A Blog Into A Facebook Fan Page

Social media is where it’s at, and it’s a great source for additional traffic to your blog or website. We publish our content on Twitter (using Twitterfeed), on MySpace (through the Twitter integration native to MySpace), and on Facebook (through NetworkedBlogs).

And while NetworkedBlogs is great, the end-user has to install the NB app in order to follow us. I don’t know about you, but I RARELY install Facebook apps..

So we decided it was time to create a seperate Facebook Fan Page for the blog in question. Then came the question of how to import our blog posts into the Facebook page (rather than into my personal profile).

This ended up being more complicated than it should have been! For whatever reason, everything on Facebook seems to be more difficult than it should be..

In any event, I finally figured it out, and wanted to share the steps you need to take to accomplish this:

  • Go to your Fan page.
  • Click on Notes tab near top.
  • Click on the “Write A New Note” button on upper right.
  • Then click on the Notes icon that appears in the row of icons in upper right.
  • Then you will see an option on the right that says “you are not importing notes from an external blog”
  • Click that link, and post your blog feed URL.

That should do it. Facebook first told me my feed was empty, but I tried it again and it finally worked, importing my past few posts onto my page’s wall.

Hope this helps!

Is It Global Warming – Or Just Bad Luck?

So my trip to Florida ended up being a chilly one! The high never got over 50 degrees the whole week, which pretty much sucked. And to think, I almost didn’t bring a jacket with me! We saw people down there wearing full winter gear (hat, gloves, scarf, etc), since this was their version of Siberia..

Something’s wrong in this world. Was Al Gore right? Is global warming finally catching up with us, and causing “The Day After Tomorrow” scenario to play out in real life? We’ve had a ton of snow in New Jersey already (with no end in sight), and the rest of the country is reporting record lows as well..

At this rate, I’m going to have to get rid of my sports cars and get a WRX or something AWD. :(

Happy New Year!

Let’s put the nightmare that was 2009 behind us.. Here’s hoping that 2010 brings us all some much-needed relief!

And lots of money!

Escaping From The Snow

A few weeks ago, we got hit with 24″ of snow! Thankfully, by Christmas Day the roads were clear, and rain had washed away any evidence of the storm. But now they’re predicting 4 more days of snow, starting tomorrow.

Screw that! We decided to fly out of here and head for some warmer climate. Of course, we’re going to make a quick detour in Chicago for the NHL Winter Classic on Friday. With a whopping high of 18 degrees (and a wind chill I’d rather not think about), it’s going to be a chilly day in Chicago!

But after the game, we’re flying down to Florida to warm up!

See you in 2010!

Why Can’t I Stop Watching This Junk?

I’ve always been a bit of a television junky, but lately I’m getting straight-up addicted. My latest discovery is Pawn Stars, a show on the History channel that chronicles the daily activities at the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas. I stumbled across this show a few weeks ago, and I’ve already watched over 12 hours of it! Damn you History channel, first it was Ice Road Truckers, now this!

When I eat lunch, I usually turn on the TV and take a break. And what comes on at 12pm? Maury! Yes, these paternity test episodes have me HOOKED! My first episode had a girl who had been on the show 4 times before, having unsuccessfully tested 6 different guys. And you guessed it, guy #7 wasn’t the father either. WOW!

On TruTV, I was hooked on Operation Repo for awhile, but it’s run it’s course. It’s just too fake now.. Will that stop me from checking out the feature-length movie they’ve got in the works? Probably not. :)

What’s your guilty TV pleasure?
